IESS Courses

IESS 1001H Foundations in Indigenous Environmental Studies and Sciences

Introduces students to foundational approaches, philosophies, values, and methods. Course delivery includes lectures, interactive seminars, classroom discussions, and experiential learning. No prerequisites. This course meets the university's Indigenous Course Requirement (ICR) and is recommended for science and environmental studies students. Offered in fall and winter terms.

IESS-INDG-ERST-SAFS 3634H Introduction to Indigenous Food Systems 

IESS-INDG-ERST 3732H Addressing Indigenous Peoples' Health

Provides an introduction to the processes of environmental health risk/benefit assessment, management, perception, and communication and their application to addressing environmental health issues in Indigenous communities. Students are introduced to the processes used by communities to understand and address environmental and public health issues in the communities today. This course may be taken as a science credit by successfully undertaking an appropriate technical assignment. Prerequisite: ERSC/ERST-IESS-INDG 3731H. Excludes ERSC/ERST-IESS-INDG 3730Y. Cross-listed: ERST-3732H, INDG-3732H

IESS-INDG-ERST 4630H Indigenous Environmental Protocols and Ethics 

An introductory exploration of research ethics and protocols within the context of Indigenous Environmental Studies and Sciences. This course focuses upon the importance of balancing the recognition and protection of Indigenous rights and interests with the promotion of environmental and health research. Students in this course build a foundation of skills and knowledge for navigating ethics issues with-in their own work/ research through case studies explored in class. Prerequisite: INDG 1001H or both ERSC 1010H and 1020H.
